| What Is Functional Medicine?
As a Functional Medicine Practitioner, I am interested in how you are ‘doing’ and ‘feeling’. I am interested in you, your life, your well-being, what you eat, how much stress you are under, what exercise you do, what chemicals you have been exposed to, how well your digestive system is working, how well you are sleeping, etc.
Your total lifestyle and history gives vital clues to what may have initiated your symptoms or illness so that I can recommend simple laboratory testing (using saliva or urine) and design a lifestyle and supplement programme that will really help you feel and look better.

Functional Medicine is based on three key principles:
- It focuses on preventative health care. Your body gives many hints and signals to tell you that it isn’t working properly. If you ignore them, you will most likely develop an illness later in life. Most disease processes take many years to develop.
- It utilises scientific laboratory testing to assess how well the body’s four major systems – hormonal, digestive, detoxification, immune – are working. The majority of symptoms and illnesses come from imbalances in these systems.
- Rather than treating a disease, I look to find the underlying cause. The underlying cause almost always has its roots in an imbalance of the hormone, digestive or detoxification system.
Migraine headaches as an example:
“I don’t treat migraines, I help people with migraines”.
Each person who has migraines requires their own unique treatment plan because the cause in each case may be different: a hormone imbalance, a food allergy, muscle tension, stress or a chemical overload.
• Perhaps you have special needs for vitamins, minerals, probiotics or amino acids?
• Perhaps you have something you don’t need or want, such as environmental toxins, parasites, bad bacteria, viruses or fungus in your body.
• Perhaps you do not have the right amount of a certain hormone, enzyme or brain chemical?
And I can say with certainty, a migraine is not an aspirin deficiency. I can test your hormone system, digestive system or detoxification system to see if there are any imbalances and then advise you on what you need to do in order to bring them back into balance. Once the balance is restored, the migraine will go away.
